Revitalization can preserve the characteristics of buildings and the urban texture. It can also support the sustainable development of the community and inject new impetus into it.

I am very pleased to see that some buildings in Hong Kong have chosen to be retained in recent years. Revitalization not only preserves the characteristics of the buildings themselves and the urban fabric but also continues the sustainable development of the community. It injects new vitality into the area.

Future revitalization projects—whether small-scale painting and repair jobs or large-scale revitalization, facility upgrades, or purpose-changing engineering designs—should ideally include the participation of residents, stakeholders, and professionals from the area. This collaboration can help balance various expectations and concepts in the design process.

Revitalization helps the city continue its history and uniqueness, and strengthen citizens’ identity and sense of belonging. After all, living in the same city is lacking in individuality and boring.

We specially moved our studio temporarily to one of the vacant shops in H19 for more than three months. On the one hand, we contacted the community and allowed them to participate in the design. On the other hand, it was more convenient for us to effectively record on-site and inspect various conditions of the building to decide whether to retain it. which original architectural elements. In addition, one of the Grade II listed buildings in the H19 complex, Nos. 88-90 Stanley Street, has hired a conservation consultant to conduct a detailed study and recommend the preservation of many of the building's historic features.

Before we started this project, we conducted detailed regional research in 2019 and established connections and understanding with the community. Since we participated in this project in 2020, we have had very good interactions with residents and stakeholders in the area, including interviews, design consultation discussions, and design workshops. This bottom-up design approach is an unforgettable experience.

Through historical research in the area, we adopted "printing" as the design theme, utilizing different printing techniques to showcase the various eras of each building—from black and white and monochrome to four-color (CMYK) tones. This approach not only integrates the local environmental characteristics of the area but also conveys the idea of activation. The use of exterior wall paint is particularly suitable; it achieves excellent results within a very affordable budget. Especially on historical buildings, paint can be reapplied, making it a "reversible" change.

The variety of paint colors, texture options, and excellent durability are the main advantages of SKK.

The SKK team provides detailed analysis and suggestions for the project, offering multiple samples for each paint color—regardless of the construction scope—allowing us to choose and match effectively. This is particularly important when considering unusual color combinations, as having several samples helps predict and achieve the best effect.
